It’s all fun and games, until someone gets hurt.

On Sunday night, Portland Police responded to a call about a shooting at South East Portland Park but when they arrived, the shooters had fled from the scene and Borisshell Washington was found dead by a shot to the head. Borisshell was at the park for a Barbecue and was supposed to graduate High school this following weekend. Those who were at the park said they saw two cars speed away from the scene right after the shooting. Monday morning police arrested 18-year-old Todd Rutherford and they suspect he is one responsible for Borisshell’s death. The police believe the shooting was gang related and that Borisshell was not the target of the shooting but simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one knows for sure why this happened but it did happen. So Rutherford is being held without bail for gang-related homicide, but they have not released any other information.

Rutherford himself is only 18 and when you think about it, he could be graduating high school as well had he not been involved in a gang. Have you ever heard the phrase, “It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt?” That is somewhat how it is with gangs. You decide to join because they are like family, and everyone looks out for everyone else and you have power in “your hood.” For a while, you do small crimes that you can get away with but like the phrase says, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Like Borisshell Washington. Now all of the sudden the funs over and someone is dead who was not supposed to be dead. The thing is the whole gang cannot suffer because of one person’s mistake, so that family you thought would look out for you, hangs you out to dry, right where the police can find you. See the thing is the “family” mentality only lasts as long as the “family” is safe after that, you are on your own.

So what is the point? Stay away from the gangs and guns for that matter. If Rutherford is found guilty of the murder, he will be spending quite a chunk of time in prison and he is only 18! That is some of what could have been the best years of his life in a cell because he felt he had to prove something to a bunch of guys he considered “family.” You are above that. Take the opportunity you have to go to school and hang out at awesome places like, well here at Youth Outreach, and enjoy life outside of the jail cell, for free. I you do need help come talk to us.
